Presenter Biography

Gerald Fishman, M.D.

The Chicago Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired

Dr. Fishman is director of The Pangere Center for Hereditary Retinal Diseases at The Chicago Lighthouse for People Who Are Blind or Visually Impaired and professor emeritus at the University of Illinois, Department of Ophthalmology. He has spent over 40 years caring for patients and conducting investigations on various forms of hereditary disorders of the retina. Dr. Fishman and his colleagues have focused their research efforts on the identification of molecular genetic defects in various hereditary retinal disorders and clinical investigations on the natural history for visual loss in patients with inherited retinal diseases. Currently, Dr. Fishman and his team of investigators and collaborators are pursuing treatment trials on various blinding retinal diseases that include gene replacement therapy for patients with congenital color blindness and the use of a vitamin A analogue for treatment of patients with retinitis pigmentosa.
