Presenter Biography

Stephen Daiger, Ph.D.

University of Texas Health Science Center, Houston

Dr. Daiger is the TS Matney Professor in Environmental and Genetic Sciences and Mary Farish Johnston Distinguished Chair of Ophthalmology at the Univ. of Texas Health Science Center, Houston (UTHealth). His research is focused on gene discovery and mutation detection for inherited retinal diseases such as retinitis pigmentosa (RP). He directs the Laboratory for Molecular Diagnosis of Inherited Eye Diseases, a CLIA-Certified DNA diagnostic facility. Dr. Daiger and his colleagues have identified a number of retinal disease genes including AIPL1, HK1, IMPDH1, KIF3B and RP1. DNA screening in the diagnostic laboratory currently leads to identification of disease-causing mutations in 80% of dominant RP families. Several families have entered clinical trials based on genetic results from the laboratory. He is a Vice Chair of the Scientific Advisory Board of the FFB and serves as an advisor to pharmaceutical companies developing treatments for inherited retinal diseases, including Applied Genetic Technologies Corporation and Spark Therapeutics. Dr. Daiger and his colleagues also manage the RetNet™ Web site which lists all genes known to cause inherited retinal diseases.
