It’s holiday time, the giving season, when people not only buy gifts for family, friends and co-workers, but also donate to worthy causes—of which there are many. But, if you’ll permit me, I’d like to make a pitch for the Foundation Fighting Blindness (FFB), which happens to be offering a Holiday Board Match, meaning every donation is doubled.
This is an extraordinary time for FFB. After 44 years of being in the business of putting an end to vision-robbing retinal diseases, our work is coming to fruition.
You’ve heard of the “bionic retina”? By providing its developer with seed money, the Foundation helped ensure that the device—approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)—would provide light for those whose lives had gone completely dark.
And in October, the company developing a gene therapy for LCA, one of the diseases we target, announced positive results in the final phase of a human study. If all goes well, that treatment could be approved by the FDA in 2016, thanks in large part to Foundation-funded pre-clinical and clinical studies.
And, right now, more than 20 clinical trials for treatments of other retinal diseases, affecting millions of people worldwide, are either up and running or soon will be—many of them, once again, thanks to research FFB has funded for decades.
This retinal-research momentum is unprecedented. Your gift will help ensure there’s no slow-down in the development of treatments for tens of millions of people affected by retinal diseases.
That’s why members of our Board of Directors have generously created the Holiday Board Match. All donations, no matter what the size, will be matched. If you give $10, it becomes $20; if you give $50, it becomes $100; and so on. And all of it feeds into the research pipeline—which, when you think of it, makes your gift to the Foundation a gift of sight for someone in the future.
I thank you for your time and consideration this busy holiday season. And on behalf of the Foundation, Happy Holidays!
