Richard G. Weleber, M.D.

Richard G. Weleber, M.D., is director of the Oregon Retinal Degeneration Center at Casey Eye Institute, Oregon Health & Science University. He earned his medical degree from the University of Oregon Medical School, then completed an ophthalmology residency and two fellowships in medical genetics. Dr. Weleber also serves as director of Electrophysiology and Visual Function Service for the Casey Eye Institute. He is a principal investigator for the RPE65 gene replacement clinical trial for Leber congenital amaurosis sponsored by Applied Genetic Technologies Corporation. He is also a principal investigator for the StarGen ABCA4 gene replacement clinical trial for Stargardt disease and the UshStat MYO7A gene replacement clinical trial for Usher Syndrome Type 1B - both sponsored by Oxford Biomedica. In addition, Dr. Weleber serves as a principal investigator for the FFB-sponsored valproic acid clinical trial for retinitis pigmentosa. His ongoing research interests include clinical and molecular research for RP and related disorders, including syndromic forms of RP, and the development and validation of endpoints for clinical trials for retinal degenerations.
