Presenter Biography

Lou Tutt

Executive Director
Association for Education and Rehabilitation of the Blind and Visually Impaired


Lou Tutt, is currently the executive director at the Association for Education & Rehabilitation of the Blind & Visually Impaired. Mr. Tutt received his B.S. in health, physical education and recreation from Norfolk State University. He also received a M.D in Special Education with a focus on Visual Disabilities and Kinesiology from Michigan State University. Lou began his career working with individuals with visual impairments as a motor skills teacher for Rubella deaf and blind children at the Michigan School for the Blind in 1971.

In 1981, Lou served as superintendent of the Missouri School for the Blind. He later moved to Maryland and because president of the Maryland School for the Blind. A couple of years later, he retired. and president from 1990 to 2003. Lou retired from the Maryland School for the Blind in 2003, he thought. He moved to Colorado Springs where the Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind is located. They needed a principal, so Lou unretired and served as principal for the next eight years, before becoming the fifth Executive Director of AER in April 2011. But Lou says, “Once a teacher…always a teacher.”
