To learn more about treatments and cures by primary area of study click on one of the links below.

Genetics
Genetic research is the critical first step in developing treatments and cures for retinal degenerative disease. Foundation researchers have isolated more than 50 genes with mutations causing retinal degenerative diseases.
Gene Therapy
Foundation-supported researchers have restored vision in dogs born blind. With this breakthrough, FFB is developing gene therapy programs for the entire spectrum of retinal degenerative diseases.
Retinal Cell Transplantation and Stem Cells
By transplanting healthy retinal cells, researchers have slowed vision loss. The recent discovery of adult retinal stem cells may pave the way to replace diseased retinas and restore vision.
Artificial Retinal Implants & Surgery
Implantable artificial retinas made of silicone have entered clinical trials. Retinal Translocation Surgery shows promise in restoring lost vision to patients with AMD.
Nutrition and Lifestyle
Clinical trials have found that certain nutrients can slow vision loss. Results from epidemiology studies are uncovering risk factors that influence the risk and the course of disease.
Drug Delivery
Most drug therapies cannot reach the retina. Foundation researchers are working to develop innovative devices that can deliver sight-saving therapies.
Neuroprotective Therapy
Foundation researchers have discovered several drug therapies that dramatically delay vision loss.
