In Orlando with her family and friends present, April Lufriu, the reigning Mrs. America, won the title Mrs. World! We are all so proud of her and the opportunity this gives her to spread even more awareness of retinal degenerative diseases!

September 28, 2011 - Tampa Bay Chapter President April Lufriu, who was crowned Mrs. America earlier this year, has high expectations of raising awareness about retinal degenerative diseases during her reign through next spring. Now an official spokeswoman for the Foundation, April hopes sharing her story will shine an added spotlight on the importance of driving promising research toward treatments and cures.

“I’m thrilled for the opportunity to generate awareness about FFB’s important work in advancing research that gives hope to my family and millions of other Americans affected with blinding diseases,” she said. “The Mrs. America crown opens the door for me to provide encouragement for the visually impaired to live life without limits while progress in research leads us to a future without darkness from retinal degenerative diseases.”

A 42-year-old wife, mother of three, business owner, and tireless Foundation advocate, April had been successful in beauty pageants in her 20s. Upon learning that two of her children are affected with retinitis pigmentosa (RP), she decided to return to the world of pageantry as part of her mission to make a difference for her kids. April herself experiences mild symptoms of RP, and her sister was diagnosed years ago.
