Foundation Fighting Blindness Legislative Priorities and Federal Investments in Vision Research

Increased Federal Funding for the National Eye Institute
Today and in the immediate future, the Foundation Fighting Blindness is increasing funding for translational research and clinical trials for promising treatments for retinal degenerative diseases.  Because clinical trials involve many human patients, they are far more expensive than basic research.

As research costs climb, and with more translational research underway in 2012, the need for Federal support through the National Eye Institute (a part of the National Institutes of Health) has never been greater.   The Foundation Fighting Blindness strongly urges Congressional efforts to increase funding for NEI in support of retinal and other eye disease research leading to therapies with the potential to save and restore vision.

Increased Federal Funding for Stem Cell Research
Stem cell therapies hold great promise for restoring sight. Stem cells can be used to protect and nourish existing retinal cells and replace those cells lost to retinal disease.  The Foundation Fighting Blindness supports the expansion of Federally-approved lines of stem cells that can be used in medical research, and strongly urges Congress to support policies that encourage the robust pursuit of stem cell research.
