Father & Son Bike Across the Country to Fund Retinal Research

Eighteen-year-old James “Bubba” Frigo, Jr., and his father James Frigo, Sr., are completing a country-wide bike ride in support of the Foundation Fighting Blindness. Two years ago, Bubba was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa, a disease he learned would slowly steal his vision. Determined to make the most of the sight he has left, Bubba and his father dreamed up a plan to ride their bikes across the country.

After careful planning, the men set out on their bikes from San Diego, California on June 14. Over the course of their ride, Bubba and James will cross through 14 states until they reach New York City. Using the Race to Cure Blindness program, Bubba and James turned their ride into a fundraiser for the Foundation, in hopes that a treatment or cure for Bubba’s condition will be found in his lifetime. They’ve raised over $7,000 so far, with a goal to reach $125,000. The Foundation would like to wish Bubba and James a great and safe ride! Support Frigo’s Big Challenge!

After a celebratory visit to the Foundation’s headquarters in Baltimore and some brotherly love from Foundation members in Philadelphia, the Frigos arrived to a media blitz at their final destination of New York City on July 22. For the Frigo family, it was a memorable and rewarding 40-day cross country bike ride to raise money for sight-saving research.

Here’s a video clip of their appearance on the CBS Early Show, which includes a nice mention of the Foundation:
