Antioxidant

A nutritional supplement (like vitamins C or E), drug, or naturally occurring product that protects cells from damage induced by light, stress or metabolic processes (called oxidation). Antioxidants are also prevalent in foods, such as vegetables and fruits.

An antioxidant is a substance that protects a cell from potentially damaging cellular byproducts of light exposure, numerous stressors (e.g., bacterial/viral infections) or inflammatory and metabolic processes (called oxidation). Some antioxidants include compounds normally present in food such as, vitamin E, beta-carotene, lutein and zeaxanthin, and vitamin C. If you use nutritional supplementation, please consult with your personal physician and ophthalmologist as your personal health situation may require monitoring or a non-typical approach and nutritional supplements may interfere with prescribed medicines.
