August 11, 2011 - Yankees fans have the unique opportunity to meet team greats Bucky Dent and Mickey Rivers, hear a “state of the team” talk from General Manager Brian Cashman, take swings in a batting cage, and tour the dugout and clubhouse at the ‘Pitching for a Cure’ Family Day at Yankee Stadium. The event will take place on Tuesday, Aug. 30, from 2 p.m. - 6 p.m., and is organized by the White Rose Good Neighbor Program in conjunction with the Foundation Fighting Blindness to support sight-saving research. ‘Pitching for a Cure’ attendees will have the chance to meet 1978 World Series MVP Bucky Dent and former Yankees outfielder Mickey Rivers. General Manager Brian Cashman will also be on hand to give an insider team perspective on postseason possibilities and answer questions. Guests will enjoy dugout and clubhouse tours and the opportunity to take swings in a batting cage and clock their fastball in a speed pitch machine. The afternoon will also include t-shirt and signed baseball giveaways, food and drinks, as well as raffles and a silent auction of authentic Yankees memorabilia.“Raising awareness and important funds for blindness research through such a unique, family-friendly event moves me as both a father and lifelong Yankees fan,” said Jason Ferreira, a Foundation Fighting Blindness volunteer and part owner of White Rose’s Met Foodmarkets. “Learning that my one-year-old son is visually impaired due to a rare retinal disease was devastating, but I’m hopeful that a cure is in sight and very eager to support research that will help get us to the day when my son and millions of others don’t have to live in darkness.” Event proceeds will in part benefit the Foundation Fighting Blindness, whose urgent mission is to drive the research that will lead to preventions, treatments and cures for the more than 10 million Americans affected with retinitis pigmentosa, macular degeneration, Usher syndrome and the entire spectrum of retinal degenerative diseases. About Foundation Fighting Blindness The Foundation Fighting Blindness is a national nonprofit driving blindness research that will lead to preventions, treatments and cures for retinitis pigmentosa, macular degeneration, Usher syndrome and the entire spectrum of retinal degenerative diseases that affect more than 10 million Americans. In its 40-year history, the Foundation has raised more than $425 million as the leading non-governmental funder of retinal research. With a network of 50 chapters, the Foundation also provides free disease information and low vision resources to affected individuals and families. Most recently, a breakthrough Foundation-funded study using gene therapy restored some vision in children and young adults who were previously blind, paving the way for using this method to treat a wide variety of retinal degenerative diseases, and proving a cure is in sight.
