Optelec/ShopLowVision Partnership Boosts Retinal Research, Low Vision Awareness

Owings Mills, MD - January 30, 2009 - The Foundation is pleased to announce a new corporate partnership with Optelec/ShopLowVision, a worldwide leader in low vision solutions for people who are blind or visually impaired. The San Diego-based company has made a generous donation to the Foundation and will be providing information, resources, and low vision aids for use at chapter meetings and VisionWalk kick off luncheons in California, Texas, New York, Florida, and Chicago.

Optelec/ShopLowVision will also set up a VisionZONE at select VisionWalks, where visitors can experience vision loss through simulation goggles, and use Optelec/ShopLowVision low vision aids to experience how these resources can accommodate low vision. VisionZONE participants can navigate an obstacle course wearing sight-reducing goggles; access a daily living area complete with low vision products; and visit a health and wellness area with information on lifestyle practices and nutrition to prevent vision loss.

Andre Hardy, president of Optelec, served as the business chair for the San Diego VisionWalk in 2009. He says, “Our partnership with the Foundation Fighting Blindness is a symbol of our combined commitment to help provide preventions, awareness, treatments and cures for people affected by retinal degenerative diseases."

Stephanie Wells, a director of development for the Foundation says, "We are very pleased to have Optelec and ShopLowVision join the Foundation Fighting Blindness in our drive to cure retinal degenerative disease. This new partnership can also help fulfill immediate needs of our constituents, and at the same time, make a measurable difference in their daily lives."
