San Diego, CA - September 12, 2008 - Hundreds of residents from across San Diego, Calif., will support the fight against blindness by participating in the San Diego VisionWalk on Sept. 14, at 9:00 a.m. Whether walking for themselves, for loved ones or to support this important cause, participants in the San Diego VisionWalk are doing their part to help the over 10 million Americans who suffer from eye diseases that can lead to blindness. Proceeds from the San Diego VisionWalk will go to the Foundation Fighting Blindness, a national non-profit organization that funds the research and clinical trials to cure blindness causing retinal diseases. The San Diego VisionWalk is being hosted by the San Diego Chapter of the Foundation Fighting Blindness and lead by Erin Goodwin-Allen, VisionWalk Chair. Erin was diagnosed with a disease that causes blindness, retinitis pigmentosa, more than 26 years ago. She is a teacher and a mother of two active children. Erin and her family are organizing the inaugural San Diego 5K VisionWalk in the effort to find a cure to diseases like retinitis pigmentosa. “I am excited to be a part of the fist San Diego VisionWalk,” said Erin Goodwin-Allen. “The Foundation Fighting Blindness is funding key research around the world that is leading to very promising treatments and cures for retinal degenerative diseases. This ground-breaking research is the best hope for saving and restoring my sight and the sight of others like me and VisionWalk is an important event that will move us one step closer to a cure.” Conceived by the Foundation Fighting Blindness in 2006, 42 VisionWalks are taking place in twenty-five states across the country throughout the year, building awareness of retinal diseases and funding the research to find cures. VisionWalks have raised over $5 million to date, and as promising treatments move into critical human studies, the need for research funding is greater than ever before. The Foundation Fighting Blindness is the largest source of non-governmental funding for retinal degenerative disease research in the world. The urgent mission of the Foundation Fighting Blindness is to drive the research that will provide preventions, treatments and cures for people affected by retinitis pigmentosa, macular degeneration, Usher syndrome, and the entire spectrum of retinal degenerative diseases. Most recently, the Foundation funded a clinical trial at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia which restored sight to three participants, proving we are just around the corner from a cure.
