Embryonic stem cells hold incredible promise for the development of treatments for all retinal degenerative diseases.
To address this issue, Foundation science leaders Dr. Stephen Rose, chief research officer, and Dr. Steven Bramer, chief drug development officer, advocated for increased federal support for embryonic stem cell research in an opinion editorial that was published on The Hill’s Congress Blog. In a separate Nature article, Dr. Rose addressed the Foundation’s inability to directly fund Advanced Cell Technology’s clinical trial for treating Stargardt disease, a study that uses retinal cells derived from embryonic stem cells.
On the events front, the Foundation honored Dallas real estate icon Ebby Halliday for her 100th birthday with a Roast & Toast celebration in February. Journalists from the Dallas Morning News, the Dallas Business Journal and Haute Living Dallas, among other media outlets, reported on the evening’s entertaining lineup of musical performances, toasts and even a surprise song and dance number from some of the city’s most notable leaders.
Passionate supporters of the Foundation also shared their stories with media to help raise awareness in their communities, with an opinion editorial published in the Denver Post, and profile features in the Tampa Tribune, and Boston’s Arlington Advocate. |
