Sight-restoring Research of Bennett and Maguire Featured in Smithsonian

Friday, 02 January 2009

As the landmark clinical trial of gene therapy at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia expands, and more participants report vision restoration, Jean Bennett, M.D., Ph.D., and Al Maguire, M.D., continue to receive attention from prominent media, including Smithsonian Magazine, which is featuring the researchers’ story in their January 2009 issue.

The Foundation Fighting Blindness is funding this clinical study, as well as studies of similar, sight-restoring gene therapies at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London and the Universities of Pennsylvania and Florida. The Foundation also funded much of the preclinical work, including groundbreaking studies of the treatment in Briard dogs, that made these pivotal clinical efforts possible.
