Intelligent Retinal Implant System (IRIS): Intelligent Medical Implants (Germany)

RECRUITING

IRIS is artificial retina technology for providing limited vision to people with advanced retinal degenerative diseases such as retina pigmentosa. Intelligent Medical Products is conducting a clinical trial of the device at multiple centers across Europe (Germany, France, U.K., Switzerland, and Spain). As many as 20 people will be enrolled in the study. The device includes a video camera (mounted on a pair of glasses), a pocket processor which translates images into stimulation commands, and the retinal stimulator which resides in the eye and translates commands into electronic signals. The goal of the device is to provide the user with “useful selective visual perception.” The company reports that users of the device have been able to recognize simple patterns.

Trial Status: Ongoing, but not recruiting new participants.
