Oct. 2, 2012 – As the Foundation Fighting Blindness works to advance research toward treatments and cures for retinal diseases, such as retinitis pigmentosa and macular degeneration, the organization announces October as Save Your Vision Month. The outreach campaign challenges the Foundation’s partners and affected individuals and families to take action by promoting eye health and the importance of cutting-edge research in their communities and via the internet. “As the Foundation’s first-ever Save Your Vision Month campaign, this month-long initiative to unite the retinal disease community seeks to educate, empower and inspire people from coast to coast,” says William T. Schmidt, chief executive officer, Foundation Fighting Blindness. “The passion of our members and community partners to drive the fight against blindness is infectious, as promising treatments continue to make encouraging progress in clinical trials.” As part of this health and wellness effort, Walmart associates have the opportunity to participate in Save Your Vision Month by volunteering their time to walk on behalf of blindness research and public education, while promoting healthy vision in their communities. “Participating in the Save Your Vision Month program is a fun way for our associates to give back, stay active and show that we’re community leaders in vision care and wellness,” explains Dr. Chad Overman, director of professional relations for Walmart’s Health and Wellness division. Mrs. World April Lufriu, the Foundation’s national spokeswoman who has two children affected with retinitis pigmentosa, will serve as the ambassador for Save Your Vision Month.
