Holiday Low and No Vision Cooking Tips

thanks_web_header

Many people provided great low and no vision cooking tips along with their recipe for our Holiday Recipe Contest.

Here are some of our favorites:

  • Use a pizza cutter to cut bar cookies and casseroles.  It is safer than a knife and easier to cut straight rows.
  • Snip herbs with kitchen scissors instead of a knife.
  • Type your recipe into a word document using wide margins, bold print and 18-22 font.  Then use a magnet to attach it at eye level to your range hood.
  • Use a duel sided cutting board with one side black and the other white so you always have good contrast with the food you are cutting.
  • Store bagged portions of shrimp or chicken or other meats in a plastic bag and use twist ties to close.  Use multiple ties and/or special bends to create a code to identify the particular food in the bag.
  • Use well-marked, clear measuring cups and hold them up to the window to be able to see the markings better.
  • Invest in an apple corer/peeler gadget. You get perfect slices every time and never have to worry about nicking a finger.
  • Make sure you have a sharp knife. A dull knife is more dangerous than a sharp knife because you use more pressure to push or cut and there is more of a chance of cutting your fingers.
  • Use a knife guard when cutting vegetables and other foods and avoid cutting your fingers.
  • Measure spices over a separate bowl.  This way if you make a mistake and pour too much, your full dish won't be compromised.
  • Make your countertops (and everything on them) more visible by adding lights—especially fluorescent lights—underneath your top cabinets.
Here's to safe and delicious holiday cooking!
