September 12, 2011 - Yankees fans had the unique opportunity to meet team greats—1978 World Series MVP Bucky Dent and former Yankees outfielder Mickey Rivers—at the first-ever ‘Pitching for a Cure’ Family Day at Yankee Stadium. The Aug. 30 event, which was organized by the White Rose Good Neighbor Program in conjunction with the Foundation Fighting Blindness, raised $35,000 in support of sight-saving research.

Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman was also on hand to give an insider team perspective talk on postseason possibilities and answer fan questions. Guests enjoyed dugout and clubhouse tours and the opportunity to take swings in a batting cage and clock their fastball in a speed pitch machine. The afternoon also included t-shirt and signed baseball giveaways, food and drinks, as well as raffles and a silent auction of authentic Yankees memorabilia.

“Raising awareness and important funds for blindness research through such a unique, family-friendly event moves me as both a father and lifelong Yankees fan,” said Jason Ferreira, a Foundation Fighting Blindness volunteer and part owner of White Rose’s Met Foodmarkets. “Learning that my one-year-old son is visually impaired due to a rare retinal disease was devastating, but I’m hopeful that a cure is in sight and very eager to support research that will help get us to the day when my son and millions of others don’t have to live in darkness.”
