Dallas, TX - Dallas Dining in the Dark Visionary Awards Dinner 2010

The Foundation Fighting Blindness hosted its 2nd Annual Dallas Dining in the Dark Visionary Awards Dinner on Thursday, April 8, 2010 at the Hilton Anatole. This year’s dinner honorees, Millie & Dr. Ken Cooper and Margo & Jim Keyes, were honored for their outstanding commitment to this community and people throughout the world.

Margo Keyes has had an extraordinary career in fashion merchandising, and has worked for the British Consulate in Dallas as their international vice-consul commercial trade officer. James Keyes has been a highly successful CEO for Blockbuster and 7-Eleven. Both Margo and Jim are outstanding civic leaders and supporters of the arts, education, health care, and much more in the Dallas community.

In 1968, Dr. Kenneth Cooper launched a worldwide fitness revolution, when he published his first bestseller, “Aerobics.” Celebrating Cooper Aerobics Center’s 40th anniversary in 2010, Dr. Cooper continues to be recognized as the “Father of Aerobics.” He initiated an international physical fitness movement that motivated more people to exercise for good health than any other person ever had. He serves as chairman of eight health and wellness companies and a research and education nonprofit The Cooper Institute.

Known as the “first lady of aerobics,” Millie Cooper joined her husband in shaping the way Americans view personal health. In 1972, Millie co-authored Aerobics For Women with Dr. Cooper. More than 16 million copies of this book and related editions have been sold. The book has been translated into 31 languages.  Millie has been recognized by the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports as one of the five women in America who is a leader in fitness. She has appeared on many national television programs and has been featured in People, Woman’s Day, McCall’s, Time, Dynamic Maturity, Listen, and Family Life Today.

The evening began with an introduction from the Foundation Fighting Blindness CEO, Bill Schmidt, followed by a personal and touching speech by Foundation Fighting Blindness Chairman and Co-Founder Gordon Gund. After the introduction speeches, Todd Chartier, Dallas/Fort Worth Chapter President gave a wonderful speech before the Event Co-Chairs, Ebby Halliday Acers and Congressman Pete Sessions, introduced the honorees and presented them each with their 2010 Visionary Awards.

The dinner continued after the awards presentation with an unforgettable dining experience in complete darkness, as the guests were taken through a unique journey of tastes, sounds and touch with their visually impaired servers.  This truly memorable evening raised over $284,000 for critical research with over 350 guests in attendance from the local community and ophthalmic businesses.
