Nicholas Katsanis is an Associate Professor in the McKusick-Nathans Institute of Genetic Medicine of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He obtained his B.S. from University College London and his Ph.D. in genetics from Imperial College London. After a post-doctoral fellowship in Genetics at Baylor College of Medicine, he became an assistant professor at Baylor in 2001 and joined the Johns Hopkins Medical School faculty as an assistant professor of Genetics in 2002. His laboratory uses a multidisciplinary approach to study the genetic and cellular basis of pleiotropic disease. He has made several contributions to the understanding of Bardet-Biedl syndrome. He is also very interested in determining whether there is a functional link between rare disorders and common traits with overlapping phenotypes. Age-related macular degeneration is a complex multigenic disease that shares some features with monogenic retinal dystrophies and is a major interest of Dr. Katsanis.
