Alexander R. Gaudio, M.D. is Assistant Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology, Harvard Medical School. Over the past 16 years he has devoted himself to work in the field of retinal degenerations with a particular interest in the functional assessment of patients with age-related macular degeneration and patients with retinal vascular disease. Since 1999 he has co-authored seven papers published in peer-reviewed journals. One of these papers reports the usefulness of focal electrorinograms in the assessment of patients with macular disease. Other papers demonstrate the conditions under which some patients with the typical forms of retinitis pigmentosa benefit from a treatment regimen which combines vitamin A with docosahexaenoic acid as well as the potential value of a diet which includes omega-3 rich fish. He has also participated in research leading to the observations that patients with pericentral retinitis pigmentosa, an atypical form of retinitis pigmentosa, have an unusually slow course of disease and that visual acuity is correlated with central retinal thickness in patients with typical forms of retinitis pigmentosa. Approximately 25% of his professional efforts are spent in non-private practice in ophthalmological research and teaching as a consultant in the Electroretinography (ERG) Service and as a member of the Berman-Gund Laboratory at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. In these capacities he is involved in the teaching of fellows, residents, and medical students in addition to providing care to patients with retinal disease. |
