Ronald Edward Carr, M.D.

Dr. Carr is currently Director of the Medical Retinal section of the Department of Ophthalmology at the NYU Medical Center. As such he directs the medical retinal clinics at the Medical Center and at Bellevue Hospital. Within this area there is particular emphasis on hereditary retinal degenerations, macular degenerations of both the inherited as well as age-related varieties, and vascular diseases of the retina, particularly diabetic retinopathy. Dr. Carr’s group includes three Ph.D.s trained in the fields of psychophysics and retinal physiology, one fellow at the PGY 5 level, one other full-time physician, a photographer and a technician. This group has effectively worked together for over 30 years. Dr. Carr received his M.D. degree from Johns Hopkins and his residency training at NYU. He stayed at NYU an additional year as chief resident during which time he also did research studies which led to his M.Sci. degree. He subsequently went to the Ophthalmology Branch of the National Institutes of Health, initially as a Clinical Associate and then as Associate Ophthalmologist in charge of the in-patient and out-patient services. Leaving the NIH he returned to NYU as Assistant Professor and seven year later was appointed full Professor. He has been the recipient of several NIH grants as well as grants from private philanthropic groups, all in the area of hereditary retinal diseases and visual electrophysiology. |
