Sara J. Bowne, Ph.D.

The name of this individual is Dr. Sara J. Bowne. Dr. Bowne has a Ph.D. degree and is a Faculty Associate in the Human Genetics Center in the School of Public Health at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston. As a Faculty Associate in a non-profit, State-supported, university-based medical center she has research, teaching, service and administrative duties relating to medical genetics, molecular biology and public health. Dr. Bowne received her undergraduate BS degree from State University of New York College in Fredonia, NY, in 1993 in recombinant gene technology. She received her MS degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center, Houston, TX, in 1998 in human genetics; and her Ph.D. from the same institution in 2001. She was Teaching Assistant, State University of New York College at Fredonia, 1990-1992; a Research Assistant, at the Univ. of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, TX, 1993-1994; a Forensic DNA Analyst in the Joseph A. Jachimczyke Forensic Center, Houston, TX, 1994-1997; and a Research Associate at the Univ. of Texas HSC at Houston, 2001-2004. She became a Faculty Associate in 2008. Dr. Bowne’s research interests include identification of genes and mutations causing autosomal dominant, autosomal recessive and X-linked retinitis pigmentosa, and related and cognate diseases, using linkage mapping, DNA sequencing, MLPA, bioinformatics, and other laboratory and computational approaches; and follow up studies on the pathologic mechanisms involved in specific disease-related genes and disease-causing mutations.
