Alan Bird, M.D., FRCS

Professor Alan Bird is Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology, UCL Institute of Ophthalmology and Honorary Consultant, Moorfields Eye Hospital. Professor Bird’s research focuses on understanding the causes of inherited retinal diseases such as retinitis pigmentosa (RP) and age-related macular degeneration (AM.D.) and developing potential new treatments for them. He works in partnership with Professors Robin Ali and Fred Fitzke at the Institute of Ophthalmology. Areas of research include gene therapy where genes are introduced to correct the function of the gene causing the condition, in this case used for the treatment of early onset retinitis pigmentosa. The use of cell transplantation (transplantation of cells at the back of the eye) is also being developed to treat retinal diseases. His recent awards include the Bowman Lecture, Royal College of Ophththalmologists, the Krill Memorial Lecture, Chicago, the Lang Lecture, Royal Society of Medicine, the Gabriel Coscas Gold medal lecture, Aggiornamento in Ofthalmologia, Rome, the Helen Keller Award and the Alcon Award.
