Ernst J. Schaefer, M.D.

Ernst J. Schaefer, M.D. is Professor and Senior Scientist, Director, Lipid Metabolism Laboratory at Tufts University. He is a graduate of Harvard College, Dartmouth Medical School, and the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. He did his medical residency at Mt. Sinai Hospital, New York, and an endocrinology fellowship at the NIH, where he also served as a senior investigator. Since 1982 he has been in Boston where he is currently a Distinguished University Professor at Tufts University School of Medicine and the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy, as well as the director of the Lipid Metabolism Laboratory at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University, and the Cardiovascular Research Laboratory and the Lipid and Heart Disease Prevention Clinic at Tufts University.  He served on the first and second adult treatment panels of the National Cholesterol Education Program, and is the US editor of Atherosclerosis. He is the author of over 400 publications, and currently is involved a NIH funded lifestyle intervention program to decrease vulnerable plaque in collaboration with investigators at the Beth Israel Deaconness Medical Center. He has served as a consultant in clinical trials conducted at the Berman-Gund Laboratory since 1996.
