Dr. Krzysztof Palczewski was named John H. Hord Professor and Chair of the Department of Pharmacology at Case Western Reserve University’s School of Medicine in September, 2005. Born in Poland, Dr. Palczewski earned his M.S. degree in Organic Chemistry and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry at the University of Wroclaw. He completed postgraduate studies at the University of Gainesville in Florida. Prior to joining the School of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University, he has held faculty positions at the University of Florida, the Oregon University of Health Sciences in Portland and the University of Washington in Seattle – the last as E.K. Bishop Professor of Ophthalmology with adjunct/joint faculty appointments in Pharmacology and Chemistry. His vision research has been awarded by four special prizes, including the Polish Academy of Science in 1978 and again in 1985, the Cogan Award in 1996, the Humboldt Research Award for U.S. Scientists in 2000 and the Alcon Research Institute Award for the Year 2001. In addition to these achievements, Dr. Palczewski and his collaborators have in excess of 300 publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals and 9 patents, approved or pending. Dr. Palczewski has also served on a variety of national scientific advisory committees and the editorial boards of several well-known scientific journals. |
