Albert M. Maguire, M.D.

Albert M. Maguire, M.D. joined University of Pennsylvania in 1992 as an Assistant Professor. He is presently an associate professor at Scheie Eye Institute, Department of Ophthalmology, where he is a member of the Retina Service. He is an attending physician at multiple institutions, including the Scheie Eye Institute, Presbyterian Medical Center, the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Penn Medicine at Radnor, and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. In addition to his clinical responsibilities, Dr. Maguire trains medical students, residents, and fellows in Ophthalmology and carries out translational research in ophthalmology. Dr. Maguire is a member of the University of Pennsylvania Institute for Translational Medicine and Therapeutics and a member of the Center for Cellular and Molecular Therapeutics at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Dr. Maguire is active with a variety of national and international organizations promoting translational research including ARVO and the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Macula Society and the Vitreous Society.
He is currently Principal Investigator of A Phase 1 Safety Study in Subjects with Leber Congenital Amaurosis (LCA)Using Adeno-Associated Viral Vector to Deliver the Gene for Human RPE65 Into the Retinal Pigment Epithelium (RPE)[AAV2-hRPE65v2-101].

Prior to joining University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Maguire was the Chief-of-Service and Instructor at the Wilmer Ophthalmological Institute (Johns Hopkins School of Medicine). Prior to this he completed a residency in Ophthalmology (also at the Wilmer Institute) and a fellowship in retinal surgery with Associated Retinal Consultants, William Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak, MI. It was during his residency and fellowship that he worked with his wife, Jean Bennett, M.D., Ph.D., to develop the foundation for many of the ocular gene therapy studies that they have pursued at the University of Pennsylvania.

Before his residency, Dr. Maguire was an intern in surgery at Yale-New Haven Hospital  at Yale Medical School. Dr. Maguire received a B.A. in Psychology Phi Beta Kappa and Summa Cum Laude from Princeton University then completed his M.D. at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Maguire became interested in developing treatments for retinal degenerative diseases during medical school while working at the Berman-Gund Lab (Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary). Dr. Maguire has received several awards throughout his career, including the Howard Crosby Warren Price Award (Princeton University), the Houston Foundation Award, the 2001 Foundation Fighting Blindness Board of Trustees Retinal Degeneration Research Award, the American Academy of Ophthalmology Achievement Award, and the Paul Kayser International Award in Retina Research (shared with Drs. Bennett, Acland, Aguirre, Jacobson, and Hauswirth).
