Philip Luthert, BSc, MBBS, FRCP, FRCPath, FRCOphth

Professor Philip Luthert is Professor of Pathology and Head of Department of Pathology and Director of the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology. Much of our work includes the morphological characterisation of human disease and of experimental models that may be used to understand underlying mechanisms of disease or validate novel therapies. A major research interest is the pathogenesis of age-related macular degeneration (AM.D.) and development of potential therapies for early disease. This includes the creation of in vitro and other experimental models of sub-retinal pigment epithelial deposits as well as extensive investigations of the morphological changes in the RPE and Bruch’s membrane of patients with AM.D.. Other areas of interest are inherited retinal degenerations, in particular the use of growth factors in photoreceptor cell rescue.
