- Diagnosis at 3 years old
- Posted: 2013-03-23 03:10:40 By Debbie K
- My 3yr old grandson's parents have been told he likely has Stargardt but it won't be confirmed until he is a few years older and can tolerate the tests.
Naturally we're devastated and hope this is not the diagnosis. We could see he had vision problems and now has glasses which helped a lot but we can see he still has problems with some things.
How many of you know of anyone diagnosed under 6 years of age?

- Hi Debbie. From the research I have done it seems most childrn are a little older than that when diagnosed, but it can be diagnosed that early. I am no expert as I have just started researching the disease myself after my 28 year old boyfriend was diagnosed. Someone else would be better suited to answer your questions about diagnosis in a child, but what I can tell you is that if it is Stargardt's please don't lose hope. I have read wonderful stories of children with Stargardt's and their abilities. I have read about children playing in band, cheerleading, and being wonderful students. Their ability to function normally with the disease is amazing and technological advances make working with computers and reading not only a possibility but a reality. They might have to work a little harder becuase of their vision impairment, but they can do pretty much anything other kids can do. If you ever want to chat please email me at keroco26@yahoo.com.
