  • went for my yearly eye exam and the eye doctor sent me to a retinal specialist, the specialist told me I have stargardts and didn't give me much info on it, I'm a single father who has custody of my 2 kids and I'm worried on what is going to happen! If anyone knows of or can recomend a good specialist or hospital I can contact to get info on this it would be a great help. I am going for a second opinion this week since the other specialist forgot what bed side manors is.I also live in New Jersey. thanks

  • I am sorry to hear you received this diagnosis without much detail. Have you had your second opinion yet? I am curious what they say. Of course this disease, as all others, effect people differently. I was diagnosed 19 years ago, and still work, drive, and lead a fairly normal life. I have daily vision struggles, but as long as I continue to be self sufficient, I am fine! I wish you luck...feel free to reach out if you have questions!

  • It is a hard diagnosis to hear. I agree that a second opinion would be good. I used to go to specialists without telling than I had SD to test them. Anyway, I have lived with SD for over thirty years. I went to college and graduate school with the few accomidations I could get at the time. I still work full time and have a normal life, as far as I am concerned. I do not drive, but have found ways to deal with it. There is a lot of information on the web that wasn't there when I was diagnosed, take advantage of it.
  • Dr. Beirson at Mass Eye and Ear in Boston

  • We live in nyc and had the best experience with Dr. Beirson in Boston. Good luck. I'm assuming you are following the stem cell research by ACT, right? Not that there is anything happening yet- just beginning--but hopeful. Also, be sure to contact The Lighthouse in nyc. Very helpful and resourceful. The woman who writes their great technology blog (for low vision and blind) has Stargardt's herself.
