- Accutane and Stargardt's
- Posted: 2010-09-30 22:34:00 By Cindy G
- Has anyone heard of an absolute contraindication for the acne med Accutane (or its generics) with patients who have Stargardt's? Our son has been on the med for a month and today when updating records with the low vision specialist, this issue was raised. Online searches are less than helpful but indicate a positive affect in the lab with mice. Visiting the dermatologist tomorrow.

- I did take Accutane about 25 years ago BEFORE I was diagnosed with Stargardt's. Within 1 year after taking it, my vision started to get worse. I have tried to make the link between Accutane and my Stargardt's, but to no avail. Over the last 20 years, I have read studies where Accutane can make it worse (because of the high levels of Vitamin A causing more "flecks"), to studies now showing that Accutane can help it. I have no idea which to believe! I did have genetic testing done and I do carry the Stargardt's gene (as well as both my parents confirmed as carriers of the gene) so I don't believe the Accutane "caused" it. But maybe it modified my genese somehow? BTW - My acne did clear up back then but I am 47 now and have acne like a teenager :(
