  • Driving Question

  • Hi all-

It's been a very long time since I posted. I have a quick question for anyone who would like to reply. Last week after an annual eye exam, it was reccomented that I no longer drive. As the mom of two little girls, my husband and I have made the decision for the saftey of us, and others, that we would make this transition. I just wanted to see how others have handled this transition? We've got a good game plan for now, but I was curious as to how you all handle your week and weekends? I still work, and the kiddos are in daycare. I have Ushers type II for those that are wondering. Thanks!

  • Hi Brooke,

I have Ushers III and I lost my license 8 or so years ago.. It was the hardest thing I went through. I was an extremely independent person and did not want to figure it all out.. But I had too, like you said for safety reasons.. I did have an accident, luckily no one was hurt, but in the end, it was the best for everyone. To give up my license. I now I have two children and it stinks not being able to take them where they want to go. But you will get through it and figure out what works best.. If you want to talk more please let me know.. I can give you things I have done and what I do now.. Best of luck..

  • Nicole,

Thanks for your response. I would love to hear more specifics. How old are your kids? Do you have family that drives you around, or someone else? Thanks.

  • Hi Brooke,
Sorry you haven't had much response on here. I haven't been on here in a long time. I have ushers 2 and lost my drivers license when i was 24. I don't have kids, but the way I've coped is I take public transit, I walk alot, I take cabs when i have to. My partner drives me places, or my mom, when it's really out of the way or a big chore. You might have to reach out on a limb a bit and talk to your kid's friends' parents to explain your situation and maybe "trade" rides for something you can offer? I also happen to live in a very walkable, small city and am walking distance to food stores and other amenities, which is really important to me. I also plan out groceries during the day, and then call my partner at work with the list and he picks them up on his way home. I recommend getting a cell phone if you don't have one, so if you're stuck somewhere, you can call a cab or have someone pick you up. I don't have one yet, but should! Not sure if that helps at all, but those are some of my tips. Carrie.

  • it completely sucks, but killing somebody or yourself would suck worse. the hardest part is giving up your freedom. In my case, I live in the suburbs of Atlanta, so I can't walk anywhere and my friends are spread around town. That said, I haven't driving since I was 26 and I'm 34 now, so pretty well used to it.

  • I was diagnosed with Usher Type II about a year and a half ago. The only reason I went to be tested was because my sister was diagnosed when she was 18. I am now 42 and it has hit me like a ton of bricks. I have been wearing hearing aids since I was 3 so I am used to that but this vision issue is really throwing me for a loop. I have 3 kids, one of whom got her license last year which is helpful but "unreliable" as teenagers go. Just 6 months ago I stopped driving at night and am wondering when I am going to have to stop day time driving. I know if you don't pass the field vision test the doctor is required by law to report his findings, which means pulling your license. So, do I get tested again or wait. I know the pros and cons of both but this decision is torturing me. Thanks for listening.
