  • Hi i have RP and i am turning 16 soon, so i will be able to drive. i was wondering if anyone with RP drives, and if anyone thinks it is a good/bad idea. i am not blind and only have some tunnel vision and night blindness, and i know i will not be able to drive at night. Any advice is appreciated.

  • Driving with RP can be very scary. My name is Lindsey, I'm 21 and was diagnosed with RP when I was 18. I struggle with driving still, and do not drive at night. I would say my best advice is be aware that if you are driving with RP that you need to be on your A-game, scanning the road at all times and on point. There is no room for slipping up when it comes to driving. My best friend drives me most of the time so that I dont have to because it is safer for both of us. For me driving is stressful because I have to constantly scan the road to make up for my blind spots, and tunnel vision. Just be careful and remember that when you should NOT be driving, you will know. Till then best of luck!

  • Hey I am 35 years old and have had RP since birth. I am currently considered legally blind. I still have most of my vision just missing some paripherial vision. I did drive from when I was 16 until I was 24. I believe I should have never drove so then I would not know what it was like to have done it and then not have it now. Also I believe my vision caused an increase in the accidents I had while driving during that time. I ultimately gave up driving on my own after hitting a pedestrian that I did not see. Fortunately that person was okay but the reason I gave it up was that if I would have hurt someone I could never live with it. I was still able to achieve all things that I wanted to do including working, finishing college, social life, and getting married. So driving creates independence but it can also create a possibility for other occurrences due to the vision loss. If you do drive be very cautious and alert to the surroundings around you and pay complete attention to every detail while you are behind the wheel.

  • I DON'T THINK IT WOULD BE A GOOD IDEA. NOT TRYING TO SOUND MEAN DONT YOU HURT YOUR SELF OR OTHERS....

  • Hello my name is Cindy Lou. I've had RP since I was 28 years old and I gave up driving as soon as I found out that I had RP. I am now 43 years old and I can honestly say that I have driven a car/truck maybe 3 times since I was diagnosed. I have some good days and some bad days with my RP but I have a great support from family and friends that help me out whenever I need a ride to go somewhere. I honestly would not reccommand driving as well to other RP friends.
