  • Husband has RP-should we have kids?
  • Posted: 2011-09-05 03:35:32 By Justine G
  • Hi,

Myself and my husband are both 26. He has RP although it hasnt started affecting him in anyway yet. We want to have kids in a few years but I am really unsure if its right to have a child knowing that it might also suffer..what do you think?

    Thanks

  • Justine,

I would suggest that you and your husband seek out a genetic counselor. The counselor will be able to talk with you about the chances of your husband passing on the genetic mutation that has caused his RP. If he has not already had genetic testing done to determine the type of RP he has, this might also be helpful in determine the chance of any future child having RP. Depending on the type of RP he has (if they can determine it), you might also want to get tested to see if you are a carrier of the same mutation your husband has.

I personally have a recessive form of RP. So unless I have a child with a person who is a carrier of the same mutation I have, my child would would only be a carrier of RP, but not have any side effects of the disease.

  • I have a twin brother and we are both 40 and have kids, he has 2 sons and a daughter and I have a son. Our kids are fine. When I went to the genetic couseling. All I remember is if you have a daughter your daughter will be a carrier. It's bad only if your daughter partner has the gene too, otherwise the kids will just pass on the gene. I would go ahead and have kids. I have RP since I was young and have trouble seeing in the dark, but do alright in the day, but summer is over and there will be less light in the day. I wish you luck in starting your new family and with this new cone trial for RP. Ir seems like a somewhat cure for RP is around the horizon. Feel free to ask me any questions if you like.
