  • Hi. I am 17 and I was diagnosed with RP at age 5. I haven;t tried for my driver's license because I was told I could only drive between the hrs of 1pm to 4pm. I want to be a math major. Would I be able to do something with the math field with this disease? If not, what else can I do with my life?

  • Brittany,

If you want to go into Math then why not? There are LOTS of technology out there that will help you be very successful as a mathematician. There are computer science folks who are totally blind.

The sky is the limit. Don't let RP controle you, you are the driver seat.

  • Brittany,

RP is a challenge, nothing more. It can't stop you from reaching your dreams. At 17 you have to learn ways to overcome the challenges. A company called Ai Squared makes software to aid with computer work, it is called Zoomtext, look into that. Your state probably has a department for the blind who can hook you up with other helpful devices.

  • There is an engineering professor at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh that is blind AND has climbed Mount Everest. I also know a person who is blind and just started college to be a veterinarian. She is getting a 4.0. People like this show others what is possible. ANYTHING!!!!

  • I just wanted to tell you that mathmeticians are discovering disease causing genes all the time. So, yes, you can do a lot with math. There is always more than one way to skin a cat. I am sure low vision aids can help you do your work, and math could help find a cure.
