  • Hi,
My 13yr old son has been diagnosed with RP and about 30% field of vision. Dr.Burke said to start him on Vitamin A-palmitate 7000iu, but all I can find online are 15000iu anyone with suggestions of where I might find a smaller dose. He also has him on 400 mg of pure DHA. He has him on these smaller amounts than usual since he's young. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

  • I buy mine from vitaminshoppe.com. Here is a link. It is a 10,000 IU dose. I take 15,000 IU a day so I break one in half to take the extra dose. They are very easy to break in half.

He should probably take Lutein with Bilberry too. Here is another link. It is more expensive. Don't let him take a multi-vitamin that contains vitamin E. Avoid E.

  • Vitamin A is a contreversial subject and more and more doctors are not encouraging this. My own ophthalmologist is on the3 FFB Scientific Advisory Board and does not encourage this at all. There really is no evidence to support Berson's claims that Vit A does anything at all.

  • My son was diagnosed last summer at the age of 15. When we went to see a RP Specialist and we asked him about the Vitamin A treatment; he said he wouldn't give it to his own son. It can be very harsh on the liver. And the Vitamin A treatment apparently has not really shown to have made that much of a difference with people who have RP. I'm just relaying back what I was told.
We do, however, have him taking 1000mg of pure DHA a day and have incorporated some saffron into his diet.

I would suggest getting a second opinion about the Vitamin A.
