  • How to prepare your child for the future
  • Posted: 2009-12-07 14:44:53 By Patricia M
  • Hello; my 16 year old son was recently diagnosed with RP. I am curious as to what kind of careers are available to him as he gets older and his vision worsens? Since college is right around the corner for him, I would like to help him find something he can major in. He really loves math, and I always told him he should be a CPA. Would this still be possible for him?

Also, any tips in helping him to prepare himself for what is in store for him?

    Thank you.

  • Hi Patricia,
You don't give details on how much vision your son has at this point. Technology has advanced and can help prolong our career. There is a private yahoo group for parents with children with RP. If you are interested, send me a message and I will give you more info. mpostlewate@yahoo.com

  • Your 18 year odl can be anything he wants. I know people who are totally blind who are lawyers, even doctors, computer scientists, you name it. Just because one has RP doens't mean they are restrictive. There is alot of technology out there.

I would encourage him to contact the local agency that services the blind in yoru State. Talk to a Vocational Rehabilitation counselor which can help guide him through his college years. They would also assist financially for college and any assistive technology he may need. That would be his first step.
