  • My question would be: Why would you want ot go on disability in the first place? It's onlya diagnosis and it really doesn't cause a disability. Learning to adapt and move forward, you can obtain employment. There are resoruces out there.

If you do decide to apply for SSDI through the SSA then you need to be prepared that there are two factors they look at: Level of blindness and whether it meets the medical critera. And functionaity. Meaning how well you function. It can be done but th eprocess is often long with people who have RP. Especially when you have some useful vision.

If you want to work but need assistance getting equipment to remain employed, then cotnact the state agency for the blind in yoru state and request assistance. Speaking to a Vocational Rehabilitation counselor will be very useful.

  • my husband applied for ssa after being dx legally blind with RP, he has had RP for 9 years and his is very aggessive with only 3 degrees of vision left. He worked as long as he could but eventually was let go from his job because of his loss in vision. The process did not take that long and there was a 6 month waiting period but after that he started receiving SSA with a couple months of back payment as well. The fact that RP is progressive with no cure is one thing that SSA is based on as well. Definitely retaining employment as long as you can and then trying to find employment with in your limitations is a better route as the SSA payments are definitely not enough to live off of. We are very lucky that I have a great job and therefore his SSA is supplement for us. He has continued to go to school to get his degree so he can someday return to work in some way.

  • I have applied for SSD in CA. I have night blindness with 10-15 degrees of peripheral vision in either eye, I understand legally blind is less than 20 degrees.

After 8 mo of waiting & two exams, my initial case has been denied. My disability has been documented & confirmed, but I was still denied. I am hoping to find a lawyer to appeal my cases. So far I have found most lawyers will not help unless it is an easy win, they are looking for the payoff, which is regulated by the government on SS cases.

If anyone has a lawyer in S CA please send on the referral.
