  • Hello Everyone,
It has been a while since I have been here. My son is now 3. Time goes by way too fast. Anyway, when I was pregnant I heard from a lot of you about how life would be for me and my son. He DOES know that "mom" can't see, BUT he takes great advantage of that instead of helping me!!! My legs stay bruised up from running into and over his toys. But when we go off somewhere he makes everyone that we are with turn on every light to every room that we go into b/c he knows that is what I have to do.
Is it normal for him to be doing this?(Taking advantage I mean.) I would also like to hear from parents in small towns with no public transportation with kids in Pre-K. How do you get your kids to and from school? I have plently of friends and family that are willing to help me once my son starts to school, but I feel bad having to put people out. They may want to halp in the beginning but what happens when they get tired of having to deal with an EXTRA child??
Hope you are all doing well!!

  • Hi Bridget,

Nice to see you again. Yes time certainly does fly fast!

First of all, from what you post here certainly isn't a child taking advantage of you. You gotta love a three year old's thinking! They "know" something is amiss with mom (or Dad in my case) cannot see but they cann't fully comprehend this. Picking up toys is definately something we'lll always have to deal with, including me. I have a 10 year old and an 8 year old so it's a constant thing around my house.

Now, as to your dilemma re: transportation, I think you are getting caught up into something thinking that you are a burden. You cannot do this to yourself because then it's a way to beat yourself up and turn into a mental state that won't do you any good. You have people who are willing to help out, so why not use them? If it becames a problem later then deal with the problem then. What's important is that you have the help now.

For me, the daycare/school is only a few blocks away from my place so I can easily travel and get my dauther to/from there. But I always find it that if someone says they want to help then use them, otherwise, it's down the road when you ask for help that it doesn't happen. That's just my experience.

  • Hi Bridget,
I just signed back in after many many months. My son is almost two years old and I don't know many people in our position....I have RP. I too trip over toys and constantly have bruises. I have also recently started hitting my head a lot - not fun. Please feel free to send me an email if you ever want to talk. I have heard that the Department of Rehabilitation can help with many things...perhaps they have some suggestions for you as far as help with transportation and your child.
