  • Omega 3 and Vitamin E
  • Posted: 2009-08-28 19:59:57 By Thomas B
  • I have been told that Omega 3 is a great thing for RP and has been shown to slow the progression. Most of the Omega 3 supplements that I've found contain Vitamin E which I've been told to stand clear of. Is 2000 IU an allowable amount of Vitamin E if I take it 3 times a week?

    I appreciate the help.

  • I'm not sure where you are seeing that Omega-3 helps with RP. There are two studies that I can think of that are misleading. The first is that they looked into XLRP that showed lower levels of DHA and suspecting that this may be a factor in rate of progression. That may be true for X-Linked RP (XLRP).

As for the other study, DHA (Omega 3) was done in conjunction with Vitamin A to see if it helped slow the progression of RP. After 2 years with DHA + Vit A, there was no additional benefit from DHA.

As for the Vit E situation, staying under 400IUs per day is recommended. But if you really want to stear clear of this from a multi-vitmain standpoint, then get T-Vites from Freeda Vitamins who comprised a mulit-vitamin specific to RP in which it is absent of Vit A and Vit E.
