  • I've always been told by doctors throughout my life that too much vitamin A is bad for the liver. I've never been told how much is enough, not even by my specialist. They just tell me, "Take vitamin A", maybe a nutritionist will know how much the body can handle without it affecting anything in a negative way, but good for our eyes. Myself, I take capsules I pick up @ GNC, from Twinlab, it's called "OcuGuard Plus". Hope this helps.

  • Hi erica,
My son was recently diagnosed with RP, and we have been referred to Dr Elliott Berson in Boston who is an RP specialist. We have not had our visit yet, but Dr Berson is a huge advocate for Vitamin A, and information can be found on his facility website, Boston Eye and Ear infirmary. Or I'm sure if you called his office, they could give you the correct info. Hope it helps......

  • Hi
I was part of the study that found that it worked to retard the progression. It is vitamin A PALMATE 15000 units a day. I get mine from Freida vitamins in NYC, the ones that made them for the studfy, Just have your Dr check liver function at physical each year. I have been on it for21 years and it has not affected my liver. I just am giving up driving at night now at 67, Can do it but feel it probably is not wise.
    Good luck
    Jill

  • Looks like we also have to be careful because high dosages (10,000IU and higher) of vitamin A, consumed in food and supplements, has been found to cause osteoporosis. The amount you should take in supplements really depend on your diet.

  • My son has been on a vitamin regimen for 9 years. He takes Beta Carotne as it does not harm the liver as does Vitamin A. Darren Z and I have gone around on this subject for years. Hi darren hope you are well. I will email you later.
This is what my son currently takes:
    Lutein 20 mg
    Beta Carotene 25,000 IU
    Vitamin C 250 mg
    Zinc 50 mg
DHA 400 mg (be careful of vitamin E in DHA)

    Avoid Vitamin E
