  • Hello. I have a 6 year old son with RP. He is goint to first grade and we are from Panama where the schools don't give you any help. I have heard of a software called MAGIC for computers. Have any of you heard of it? Please let me know. Do you know of any other stuff that could help him as notebooks with brighter lines or something. Please let me know.

  • Lis,

What form of RP does your son have? The classic case often is Rod-Cone Dystrophy often this is affecting his side vision to create tunnel vision. Therefore, central vision used for reading is unaffected. Magnification of text is generally not recommended unless he has advanced RP where the cones are affected.

MAGic is created by Freedom Scientific (www.freedomscientific.com) and is available in a free download to try. There is also ZoomText which also works well for magnification. I use ZoomText and that can be tried for free as well for 60 days (www.zoomtext.com).

Many people who are hearing and blind, use screen reader software like JAWS (from Freedom Scinetific), Window-Eyes (From GWMicro) or ZoomText Reader (from AiSquared the maker of ZoomText). This is used for computer access.

As for reading textbook and other printed material, there are what is called CCTV which are magnifiers that zoom in on the text. YOu place the textbook or printed material on the machine under a camera that will magnify the the text onto a screen. You can also adjust the colors and contrast with this as well. HumanWare is a leading manufacturer for these types of equipment.

  • Hi Lis,
I've used the Magic program on my computer before. I like the crosshair capability that it had. I tend to lose my cursor and that was a great part of the program. However, the version that I had was compatible with windows 95 and 98 and honestly it tended to lock up my computer a lot of the time, so I pretty much kept it turned off.
Like Darren was saying the zoom text does nothing for me because of my tunnel vision, it is harder for me read the larger print.
Good luck to you and your son.
    Beth
