  • X-Linked RP Diagnosis
  • Posted: 2009-01-06 12:01:37 By Stephen G
  • My 12 year old son was diagnosed with X-linked RP by a well-known Philadelphia hospital. We took him to the Mass. Eye and Ear Infirmary for a 2nd opinion. In Boston, his ERG came out in the normal range, and Dr. Bernson cleared him of the disease.

I urge everyone to get a 2nd opinion, as there can be many reasons why an ERG gives low readings.

  • Hi Stephen:

Do you know what other reasons may cause low readins ERG? Finally, what is the diagnosis of your son?

    Best regards,

    Luis G.

  • Luis:

My wife is an x-link RP carrier - and my son is color-blind. He has full field vision, and no spots on his retina. His first ERG came out low, the 2nd one was also low - although higher then the first. The 3rd ERG came out normal.

The ERG is an intense test. My son was blinking and squeezing throughout, which led to the low readings. He is also somewhat light-sensitive. The first retina specialist did not pick this up, but Dr. Berson did.

    He does not have RP.

  • Thank you for the reply.

I was diagnosed with Cone-rod distrophy 2 years ago, none of my family's members have or had a degenerative condition like this or similar.

It makes me reconsidering to get a second ERG test. Although my central vision is very deteriorated and the second fluorangiography shows macular damage.

    Best regards,

    Luis G.

  • Stephen,

That is good news. Were they able to tell you why he has some of the signs of RP? Hopefully, he will not develop others as he gets older. I guess there is so much they don't know about retina degeneration.
