- Do you use USENET?
- Posted: 2008-10-25 19:59:43 By Jonathan R
- How many of you are regular users of USENET?
Would any of you use a retinitis pigmentosa USENET group if one was to be created?
Personally, I prefer USENET groups to any website group, but there currently is not USENET group for RP. And, as many of us have recently commented, website groups have to potential to be unstable and unreliable.

- what is USENET?

- USENET is a massive collection of newsgroups. They are forums that allow for basic textual communications with other people, much like this forum does, but without the useless graphics, individual site registrations, and other bloated nonsense that gets in the way.
The simplest way for a new user to start using USENET is to use Google Groups. You can also use Google Groups' search feature to find groups that are related to topics that you are interested in, as well as in searching for the content of past discussions.

- Hey JR...
Yeah, I might use usenet with you.
Sounds simple enough.
Is it like "twitter"... that's a pretty good blog.

- USENET is more of a forum than a blog. But both are used for communicating with other people, so it's a matter of preference.
One of the main reasons that I brought this up was that we all depended on this one website to keep up a "good" place for us to communicate, and it has let many of us down, and may do so again in the future. The advantage of USENET is that it is a distributed system that isn't subject to the unreliable whims of a single website.
But there's no point in trying to start an RP group if people aren't going to use it, so that's why I'm wondering how many USENET users there are in here.

- I agree that this site is not user friendly and even less VI user friendly. There are several groups out there for RP: RPfriends, Retinitis Pigmentosa yahoo group and RPlist are the ones I know. I don't regularly post on any of them any more. RPlist is the most informative but it's rather quiet lately. I know several of the people who used to post here would post on one or more of the above mentioned groups. There is also a forum www.exjake.com whose format I prefer because it is easy to keep up with new messages and it's VI firendly. How would your group differ from the above?

- I wouldn't compare the mailing lists to forums like this and Usenet. They have their own advantages and disadvantages.
www.exjake.com seems like a decent site, but it's looks pretty inactive.
The ability to keep up with new messages (amongst many other features) is one of the great strengths of Usenet, that is if you use a good Newsreader as your interface. (I use Xnews.)
What is VI?

- Yes, exjake is not very active now, but it was when I joined a couple of years ago. I guess you can say that about other message boards and forums as well.
I am all for it if you can keep up with new messages and keep the inbox managable as well. I meant VI (visually impaired).
By the way, my name is Marisa, but it shows as Maria on this new system.

- USENET

- Hi Johnaton. I've never heard of USENET before, but I'd be very interested in using a RP USENET site. The more I can learn about RP the better! I also enjoy sharing thoughts and concerns with others who are dealing with RP. So yes, add me to the list who'd enjoy it! Thanks.
