- Help Needed

- Hello...
What do going blind or already blind people do
when they ride in a car?
How do you handle the riding experience?
Does it stress you? Do you relax, or meditate?
I panic.
Any advice would be great.

- Don't Panic

- Try to relax and go to a happy place. I know it's tough getting used to being a passenger as opposed to the driver; I think it is the feeling of not being in control that bothers me the most and giving up my independence. I was diagnosed with RP a year ago and immediately gave up my license. I do struggle with anxiety in the fact that cars are really close by the time that I see them and it is frightening at times. I go to work very early in the morning, so the am is easy. My drivers, (sister, friends, etc) are usually tired so they are not in the mood to talk anyway. I try just to relax and enjoy the ride and the company.

- Would it help to listen to something while riding, such as a taped book? There are many books on tape, many available through the library. A personal tape recorder with headphones takes up little space. I am currently enjoying the first Harry Potter book.
Another possibility is to close your eyes. Yes, it's hard to do that and ride but it might help to close them for a small measured amount of time (count to 20 or 50, etc) to lessen some of the tension you are feeling. I have found this useful. You can do this without alerting your fellow riders/driver that you are doing anything bur "resting your eyes", if you prefer not to explain your situation.
