  • Epiretinal Membrane
  • Posted: 2008-10-06 19:21:10 By Kenneth D
  • Hi, I just had catarct surgery on my right eye and it didn't clear up the distortion I have. I also have an Epiretinal Membrane. I am going to the DR for my follow up on Wednesday. Has anyone had surgery to remove the epiretinal membrane and if so, tell me about it...
    Thanks!

  • I forgot to mention that i have RP. Also, after cataract surgery, how do you handle having to wear glasses? My left eye still needs the glasses but my right eye doesn't. It is giving me headaches. If I wear the glasses, my right eye is blurry and if I don't, my left eye is blurry.

  • Hi Ken,

Surgery for epiretinal membrane is called a vitrectomy and a lot has to do with your age. If one is past 50, there is little that they can do as in my case. Perhaps you are younger and the results can be good. I had a vitrectomy for a macular hole and it resolved my problem and closed the hole. However, it did not take away the distortion as I have an epiretinal membrane too. They did an Internal limiting membrane peel along with it. However, I am happy to have my sight back in the right eye.
Also, they did a single (monocular) cataract surgery on that eye, and you are right, it is disturbing to have one eye corrected with an iol lens and one that is not!! I had to stay that way for 8 months as my vision kept getting better in the operated eye. You should be able to correct your lens in your glasses much sooner. If they are recommending surgery for you, then go for it. Just really have faith in your surgeon and get a good one!
Hope this helps and Good luck. Keep us posted on your appointment and progress!

  • I am 42 so i hope they can get rid of the distortion. I go to the University Of Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary and see Drs. Fishman and Tu. They are both great!
