- Hello:
Can anyone give me information about LTD? I would like to know information like:
a) When should you apply for it?
b) How do you go about applying for one?
c) Is it difficult to get it for legally blind people?
d) What is the relationship of SSDI with LTD/
Any information will be really helpful. I am debating about applying for it.
Thanks,
mani

- Mani,
I am currently going through this process and am wading through the mud. I recommend that you contact SS division and discuss your alternatives; they can also give you an estimate of your monthly benefit based on your previous work history. You can actually apply over the phone, online or in a local office. I have not yet done so. I am currently employed and on FMLA in order to accomodate my rehabilitation needs (yet to be determined) in order to determine if I am able to continue in my current role. In speaking with SS, it was discussed that disability through work, std then goes to ltd, can be paid concurrent with ssi benefits. Let's keep each other posted on any new information that we learn. I realize that I have not answered all of your questions but since you have not had any responses, I thought we could work through this together.

- Hi Mani,
Just read your post and will tell you my experience with SSDI. I was "legally blind" about 10 years before I stopped working. When I applied for disability (online) they made an app't for me to see their dr and i was approved the first time. I don't think with RP they give you much of a hassle if you're past the point of being able to drive and your limited vision causes problems with the type of work you do. I didn't have a problem getting it through anyway. Good luck and if there's any questions I can answer for you or Sherry, I'd be happy to. Jan

- It was announced on Friday that my company is being bought out. Chances are, I'm going to lose my position. The Data Processing market is extremely tight here in Central Ohio and I'm more or less resigning myself to the fact, it might be a good idea to consider the alternatives. Anyone willing to share their experience? Did you end up hiring an atty to help you through this? I have RP (less than 5 degrees field) and type 2 Ushers.

- Terrence - Gee - You'd think I was blind or something when I type like that - sending an empty message. To answer your question, I did not hire an attorney. I was told I should have one (by people who fought the system) but I found it very painless. I was not working when I applied. I applied online and received paperwork shortly after with an app't they set up for me. I followed the status of the claim online and found it was approved but then was randomly pulled for review. Because of the quick approval? I don't know, but it did end up going through. You may want to start requesting copies of your medical records with test results, etc now so you'll have them to send with your app. I think that saves time also. You can get a lot of information at http://www.gmhc.org/policy/benefits/ssdi.html. Since you have to be disabled 5 full months before you're eligible to receive, you may want to get started on it as soon as you can.
