  • CNTF Question
  • Posted: 2008-04-29 19:25:51 By Joshua D
  • I am in the early stage study of the CNTF implant. One of my pupils is very constricted and the other, to compensate, is always very dilated. My Doctor told me that this would eventually correct itself, but it has been almost 7 months. I was just wondering if anyone who has had the implant longer had this problem, and if so, did your pupils balance out eventually? Thank you in advance.

  • That's a common problem in many people I know who are in the study. So far, it hasn't corrected out and I'm not sure they know why. the guess is it has to do with the CNTF but it's not causing any harm so I don't know. Perhaps nothing really is wrong and that the existing photoreceptor cells do not need as much light as before?

  • No Darran the fact that the pupil is constricted has nothing to do with the pupil needing less light. I whish that was the case. I need al the light I can get in that eye. It if the side effect of the CNTF, this is a drug that affects the parasimpathetic system which is responsible for contricting the iris.

  • I didn't reailze the CNTF acted upon the parasympathetic system. Interesting.

  • I, too, am in the early stage study, but my pupils have not changed sizes (at least not that I've noticed). Perhaps I have the lower dose.

  • Hi Joshua,Darran + Debbie...
Do you have any sensation or irritaion from
    the implanted device?
Do you, or can you feel anything in youreye
(vitreous? They say that there is a suture attached to the implant for easy removal.
Can you feel this suture in your eye?
Will the capsule have to be removed in 18 months?
    Pls let me know.

  • Oh, I forgot a couple of questions.
When you got out of the Operating Room, was your eye patched,or did you see immediatley?

Now after several months, can you see better?
If so, how much better? What is your day and night vision like?

    Tkx again

  • Thomas P,
I had the implant put in June 2007, and to answer your questions, I haven't had any irritation in my eye, and can't feel the suture. The study I'm in just recently allowed the participants the choice to either keep the implant or have it removed.

Both eyes were patched after the surgery for a full 24 hours, then the patches were removed. Once they were removed, I had some double vision that went away in a couple of hours, but that was about it (although my eyes were bloodshot red for at least a month).
Haven't really noticed much difference in vision (I was already 20/20 with glasses before the surgery). Day and night vision are the same (with night vision still being pretty bad).

    Hope that answers your questions

  • Hi Robert M
    Thanks for your reply.
Would you go through this again?
Why did you go through this with 20/20 vision corrected with glasses?
  • Posted: 2008-09-23 12:59:19 By Robert M
  • I joined the study because, although my central vision is good, I'm losing peripheral vision. They estimated I've lost about 20-25% of my peripheral vision, so they're hopeful that the implant will either slow, stop or reverse the peripheral vision loss.
I would probably go through the procedure again. I've had little to no side effects from the surgery.
