- Hi there!
Im 19 and iv have RP since I remember. I was wandering if there is any kind of problem for people like us to have a laser surgey for miopia or actismatism, or maybe if its recomended to leave the eye untouched for posible futures cures for RP. If someone out there know anything please respond
Thanks

- Many places won't touch someone with retinal degenerative diseases such as RP. But even if you did pursue this, remember, RP can and often does affect the cones which is what your central vision is. So as the disease progresss you will still have to wear glasses because the problem isn't with the cornea or the lens but rather the macula where the cones are and as they degenerate are unable to compensate.

- My RP is actualy afecting my cons, but miopia and actismatism are not caused for cones or rods problems but for problems in the cornea, so i dont see whats the problems with the surgery. Its true that the people with RP are more likely to have actismatis and miopia than normal people, but the RP do not couse them directly. Di it?

- Yes, but what you fail to understand is that no matter how clear the lens is or how corrected the lens is, when the cones are affected, it does little good to have LASIK. Why? You have to understand that even as light goes through the lens, if the cones are bad, you cannot correct for poor cones.
In my case, I have astigmatism and was hyperopia (farsighted) but due to progression of RP, I now see 20/400 with correction. Even LASIK to correct for astigmatism will not improve any visual acuity because the cones are bad.
You need to understand how the eye works and lightwaves that travel through the cone. While what you are saying is correct, you also need to consider your retina function. If your retina function poorly, then the surgery will not do any good and in some cases may even speed up progression.
You are free to do what you wish, but I would encourage not to pursue this. Or at least speak to your retinal specialist first before doing such. He/she may be able to explain this better than I can and explain why this will not work for you if the cones are affected.
